About the Concert

Tombeau de Couperin - Ravel

In this concert, we shall venture away from the Classical repertoire for the first time, with Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin.

Composed by the French composer Maurice Ravel between 1914 and 1917, it is a tribute to the French Baroque composer François Couperin. Each movement of this work is dedicated to the memory of friends of Ravel who lost their lives during World War I, imbuing the piece with a poignant sense of nostalgia and reflection. The work is characterized by its intricate textures and rich harmonies, showcasing Ravel's masterful orchestration and innovative approach to rhythm and melody.

Back on more familiar ground, the concert concludes with Symphony No 35 (Haffner) by Mozart. The piece is celebrated for its lively and exuberant character, and showcases Mozart's exceptional ability to blend intricate counterpoint with memorable melodies, making it a favourite among both musicians and audiences alike. Its dynamic orchestration and engaging themes will surely provide a thrilling conclusion to the concert.

In between, you will hear Mendelssohn's iconic violin concerto, a staple of the violin repertoire and beloved by audiences for its lyrical melodies and virtuosic demands on the soloist. The performance will feature the talented violinist Andrea Lam.
